One of the most popular destinations for travellers wishing to get an in-depth look at the culture and history of Japan is the Hokuriku area: Takayama and Kanazawa cities, as well as the World Heritage Site, Shirakawa-go Village.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Tokaido Shinkansen, the Japan Rail Group has just announced a limited-run new regional pass that allows travel from the surrounding area to Hokuriku!
Price and validity
The Takayama-Hokuriku Pass is on sale now, but it is only available for use between October 1st, 2014, and June 26th, 2015.
This regional pass costs 10 500 yen for an adult, and 5 250 yen for children.
The pass is valid for 5 consecutive days, starting from the day chosen by you upon exchange of your voucher.
Where?
This regional pass offers you unlimited access to:
- Trains between Osaka and Kanazawa (passing through Kyoto and Tsuruga, among other destinations)
- Trains between Takayama and Nagoya (passing through many points in Gifu prefecture).
- Nohi Buses or Hokuetsu Buses between Kanazawa, Shirakawa-go, and Takayama. (There is no train service between these destinations.)
- Sarubobo Buses in Takayama
With this regional pass, you can use both the aforementioned bus, as well as any limited express or local trains running through the designated areas, including the Limited Express Hida and Thunderbird.
Please note that this pass does not allow travel on the shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Kyoto, nor any travel between Nagoya and Kyoto/Osaka.
How to use?
First, exchange your voucher at one of the exchange offices at the following designated JR Stations:
Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shin-Yokohama, Odawara, Mishima, Shizuoka, Hamamatsu, Nagoya, Kyoto, Shin-Osaka, Osaka, or Kansai Airport.
If you would like to reserve seats on a limited express train, this pass allows for up to 4 reservations. Rides in non-reserved seats are unlimited during the 5 days of use.
