Japan Rail Pass
Being eligible for the Japan Rail Pass
The Japan Rail Pass is accessible to any traveler, with a foreign passport, traveling to Japan with a temporary visitor* visa of 90 days or less: tourist, business trip, family visit...
Therefore, people who travel to Japan for more than 90 days (working holiday, military, diplomatic, cultural, research, working visa, etc.) are not eligible.
*Temporary visitor does not mean "short term stay" according to the Japanese Immigration Law. In order to use a JR Pass, you must have a stamp with the temporary-visit visa on your passeport.
Japanese nationals who have lived permanently outside of Japan for at least 10 years are eligible for the Japan Rail Pass.
As of October 1st, 2023, Japanese nationals are not able to buy the Japan Rail Pass online anymore. Japanese nationals matching the eligibility requirements for the JR Pass will have to purchase their JR Pass at a JR-appointed sales office or agent before their departure. Be aware, however, that the conditions are very restrictive.
You must obtain and fill in one of the following documents:
1 - An "Overseas Residential Registration" from the Japanese Embassy of your place of residence the length of residence must be at least 10 years on the day you purchase the JR Pass).
2 - A "Certificate of Overseas Residence" from the Japanese Embassy of your place of residence the length of residence must be at least 10 years on the day you purchase the JR Pass).
3 – For the United States, Brazil and Canada, a permanent residency card (the length of residence must be at least 10 years on the day you purchase the JR Pass).
You must present one of these three documents when you exchange the Voucher in Japan.
Please note that you must have those documents on you before buying your Japan Rail Pass.
Be aware that if you do not satisfy these conditions, Japan Experience cannot be held responsible for the non-validity and non-exchange of your Japan Rail Pass on Japanese soil. The conditions for cancellation of your Pass are applied by default.
The Japan Rail Pass is by definition a rail pass for people of non-Japanese nationality who want to visit Japan for tourism.
Since 1st June 2017, Japanese nationals can once again purchase and use the Japan Rail Pass.
Be aware, however, that the conditions are very restrictive.
You must obtain and fill in one of the following documents:
1 - An "Overseas Residential Registration" from the Japanese Embassy of your place of residence
2 - A "Certificate of Overseas Residence" from the Japanese Embassy of your place of residence
3 – For the United States, Brazil and Canada, a permanent residency card.
The length of residence must be at least 10 years on the day you purchase the JR Pass.
Please note that you must have those documents on you BEFORE buying your Japan Rail Pass.
You must present one of these three documents when you exchange the Voucher in Japan.
Be aware that if you do not satisfy these conditions, Japan Experience cannot be held responsible for the non-validity and non-exchange of your Japan Rail Pass on Japanese soil. The conditions for cancellation of your Pass are those applied by default.
The visa status ‘Temporary Visitor‘ is a visa for people staying in Japan for less than 90 days.
For many countries’ citizens this visa is granted automatically on your arrival into Japan thus it is not necessary to take any specific steps to obtain it.
Here is a list of these countries:
USA, UK (British Citizens), Brunei, Andorra, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Barbados, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Estonia, Finland, France,Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Honduras, Hong Kong, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Lesotho, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macau, Macedonia, former Yugoslavia, Malta, Mauritius, Mexico, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Korea, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Surinam, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Tunisia, Turkey, Uruguay.
For other countries it is necessary to make a visa application to your local Japanese Embassy. The visa ‘Temporary Visitor’ is the only visa which will allow you to use the Japan Rail Pass.
In order to exchange your voucher for the Japan Rail Pass, the JR employee will ask to see the visa in your passport. All other kinds of visa will not permit exchange.
Yes, people with double citizenship are eligible for the Japan Rail Pass.
For this entry into Japan, they must enter using their non-Japanese passport in order to get the “temporary visitor” visa. This means that children of Japanese nationals with double citizenship must enter under the nationality of the non-Japanese country, different from their parents who enter under their Japanese citizenship.
Please note that a person with dual citizenship who has entered Japan using their Japanese passport will not be able to exchange their voucher by showing their unstamped non-Japanese passport.
The most important thing is to make sure you get a “temporary visitor” visa.
To be eligible for a Japan Rail Pass, it is necessary to enter Japan on the visa 'Temporary Visitor' status, which authorises a stay in Japan of less than 90 days for unpaid activities.
In many cases this visa is granted automatically on your arrival into Japan if you enter the country as a tourist.
However, if you enter Japan under a military/business/diplomatic visa or status then you will not receive the ‘Temporary Visitor’ visa and you will be unable to exchange your voucher for the pass as you status is checked at that time.
Examples of status which do not allow the use of the JR Pass are: SOFA, APEC Business Travel Card, etc…
People residing/working in Japan generally have a long term visa (work, student, research, etc.) different from the “temporary visitor” visa. They are not able to use the Japan Rail Pass.
Only those entering Japan with a “temporary visitor” visa, valid for 90 days, are eligible for the Japan Rail Pass.
We therefore invite you to purchase a pass only for yourself, while your friend/family member must buy his/her tickets at the station for regular price.
For those residing in Japan, there are discounted tickets, such at the Seishun 18 Kippu , and other seasonal discounts.
The Japan Rail Pass and Regional Passes are by definition rail passes intended for non-Japanese nationals who wish to make tourist visits in Japan.
In order to activate your JR Pass, you will have to exchange your voucher at a JR office. These offices can be found at the airport or at major train stations, opening times will vary.
At the office, fill out the form with your details and show your passport. When exchanging the pass you will need to decide a start date, this does not have to be the same day as the exchange date, however it cannot exceed 30 days after the exchange.
Once your pass is validated you will be able to use it starting it on the date you have chosen, and for the consecutive number of days for which your pass is valid.
The Japan Rail Pass gives you the opportunity to travel in a practical and economical way while allowing you to access most attractions in Japan. Please note that there are some restrictions as to its validity.
Validity of the Japan Rail Pass:
- With a national Japan Rail Pass you can use all the trains on the JR railway network as well as JR Kyushu, JR Shikoku, JR West, JR Center, JR East and JR Hokkaido. Of course, you will have access to local and express trains but also to the fast bullet trains, 'Shinkansen', that connect most of the main cities in Japan.
The Japan Rail Pass is also valid for:
- JR Bus: local JR Bus on a large number of lines
- JR Ferry: JR Miyajima Ferry (Please note that the JR Hakata-Pusan ferry to Korea is not included)
- Monorails: Tokyo Monorail connecting Haneda Airport to Hamamatsucho Station
The Japan Rail Pass is not valid for:
- Private Rail Lines: With the Japan Rail Pass you do not, however, have access to other private rail lines apart from the JR line.If you wish, for instance, to take the Odakyu trains in the Kanto region or the Kintetsu trains in the Kansai region, you will have to buy regular tickets.
- Super Express only shinkansen: You will not have access to the "Nozomi" and "Mizuho" Shinkansen that are the fastest ones on the Tokaido and Sanyo lines. Instead you will be able to take the 'Hikari' or 'Sakura' Shinkansen that serve the same routes even if they stop at more stations and take a little longer. However, there is not a very big difference; when travelling from Tokyo to Kyoto for instance there is only a 20 minutes difference between a "Hikari" and a "Nozomi" Shinkansen.
In cities:
- The Japan Rail Pass does not allow you to ride on subways or trams within cities. However most big cities have a few JR lines that you can use to go around (Osaka Loop or Kanjo line, Tokyo Yamanote line, etc…)
Others:
It is possible to take a night train with the Japan Rail Pass but the ticket is not valid for the sleeper wagon, private wagons in night trains, and special compartments for which you will have to pay an extra fee.
If, during your journey, your JR train uses another company’s tracks, and even if you hold a pass, you will have to pay a part of the trip. Payment can be made before boarding the train or on board. For instance, to go from Shinjuku or Ikebukuro to Nikko, there is a train that links these JR stations in Tokyo to the Tobu station in Nikko.
The train leaves the JR tracks at Kurihashi to use Tobu tracks. The trip itself cost 3 900 yen, but the Japan Rail Pass holders will only have to pay the portion between Kurihashi and Nikko, that is to say 1 560 yen.
The 'Green Pass' entitles you to travel in the 'Green Car', the equivalent of our 1st class, on all Shinkansens and certain fast lines.
1st class comfort: This type of Pass is increasingly more popular with foreign travelers as considering the comfort it offers, it is good value for money. The 'Green' car will give you access to a large seat that can recline 40°, a footrest, more space between the seats (an enjoyable feature when you want to stretch out your legs after a long day of visiting), an integrated radio set, a travel magazine as well as space for your luggage.
Even more services: During your trip in the Green Car on the JR Hokkaido Line, the on-board staff will offer you a small hot towel (oshibori) as well as a hot or cold drink. You can then relax and enjoy the scenery through the large windows. The JR Hokkaido Line is considered to have some of the highest levels of service among all JR lines. This service is offered only to and from Hakodate.
Some Green Cars have smoking areas. The latest Shinkansen N700 series has smoking areas near the Green Cars.
For travelers who wish to enjoy an even more relaxing journey, private Green compartments can be found on certain Limited Express trains such as the "Super-View Odoriko".
To be assured to find a seat: Buying this Pass is a good idea if you are planning on traveling during busy times (May, August and September) because, in addition to the fact that there is more space allocated to each travelers, the Green cars are generally less busy.
Where to find the green cars: There are between 1 and 3 Green Cars depending on the train. They are indicated by a green clover on the side of the carriage. Most frequently, these carriages are located at the front of the train in order to limit the circulation of people looking for the bathrooms.
However, in the case of the Shinkansen running on the Tokaido - Sanyo line, the carriages are located next to the stairs so the travelers don't have to walk along the platform.
The location of the Green Cars is usually indicated on the platform floor. Please note that the Hikari Rail Star running from Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima or Hakata does not have Green Cars, but the wagon with reserved seats has a very similar layout.
Buying a Japan Rail Pass
A Japan Rail Pass is a personal train ticket specifically designed for foreign travelers who wish to visit Japan.
WHAT DOES IT GIVE ACCESS TO?

Depending on the duration of your stay in Japan and the places you wish to visit, several types of pass are available. Below, our advice for an informed choice.
THE DIFFERENT JAPAN RAIL PASS
As the Japan Rail Pass can only be used for consecutive days from the starting date of use and throughout its period of validity, it is very important to match your itinerary, schedule and your Japan Rail Pass.Three types of Japan Rail Pass are available to the travelers: the 7 day pass, the 14 day pass and the 21 day pass.
THE 7 DAY JAPAN RAIL PASS
If you stay in Japan for a week and are planning to move around a lot then a 7 days Japan Rail Pass is ideal. For your trip you could:
- Make Tokyo or Kyoto your base and organize daytrips from there (from Kyoto it is very nice to spend a day in Nara or Miyajima for instance)
- Organize your own itinerary and change city everyday
THE 14 DAY JAPAN RAIL PASS
If you are lucky enough to stay in Japan for more than 10 days you can buy a 14 days pass Japan Rail Pass and organize your trip alternating visits and relaxing days.
THE 21 DAY JAPAN RAIL PASS
If you are staying in Japan for more than 2 weeks, it is very economical to get the 21 day Japan Rail Pass and will allow you to enjoy Japan at a leisurely pace.
Don’t forget that there are also regional rail passes that can complete the national one and will allow you to fully enjoy a specific region.
- You are planning on visiting Japan with a Japan Rail Pass but don’t wish to use it right after your arrival?
- Your trips are spread out and you are wondering if you will be able to use your pass each time?
- You wonder if it is possible to adapt your Japan Rail Pass to your schedule?
SHOUD I START USING MY JAPAN RAIL PASS AS SOON AS I EXCHANGE MY VOUCHER?
You don’t need to start using your Japan Rail Pass on the day of the exchange. When exchanging your voucher you will have to decide on the date you want to start using your pass. This date has to be within 30 days of the exchange.
CAN I ALTERNATE DAYS OF USE AND NON-USE?
No, it is not possible. No matter what type of Japan Rail Pass you buy, you will have to use it for consecutive days from the starting date chosen at the exchange (special conditions for regional passes). It doesn't matter if you don't use your Japan Rail Pass every day but it will only stay valid for a given period of consecutive days.
For instance, if you have a 7 days Japan Rail Pass and your starting date is January 6th, you can use it until January 12th. Over this period your pass will be valid without interruption.
HOW ARE THE DAYS OF USE COUNTED?
The validity of the Japan Rail Pass is counted in full days and not in periods of 24 hours. Regardless of the time at which you start using your pass on the 1st day, its validity will end at 11:59PM on the last day.
For instance, if you have a 7 day Japan Rail Pass and start using it at 1PM on January 6th, it will be valid until 11:59PM on January 12th (and not at 1PM on January 13th)
- Visiting Japan as a group?
- Or as a family with children?
It can be complicated to organize a trip for several people.Enjoy a worry-free trip; find below all the answers to the questions you might be asking yourself as organizer or head of the family.
CAN I ORDER FOR SOMEONE ELSE?
Of course you can order for someone else or use the credit card of someone that will not travel with you. The only requirements are:- for the travelers to meet the Japan Rail Pass criteria- that the name on the ticket corresponds to the name on the passport of the traveler.
CAN I EXCHANGE SOMEONE ELSE'S VOUCHER?
Be careful, once in Japan, the traveler himself has to be present when exchanging the voucher for the Japan Rail Pass. It is impossible to activate the Japan Rail Pass on someone else’s behalf, as the travelers’ passport, as well as the identity of the pass holder, must be checked.
DO CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 6 HAVE TO PAY?
Children under the age of 6 years old can travel for free as long as they travel with a pass holder. However they are not entitled to their own seat. If you want your child to have an individual seat, and even if the child is under 6 years old, you will need to buy a children's Japan Rail Pass.
AT WHAT AGE DO CHILDREN HAVE TO PAY?
Children between the age of 6 and 11 years old have to travel with a children's Japan Rail Pass. From 12 years old the child will have to travel with an adult Japan Rail Pass.
If you plan on staying for several days in the same region you can buy a regional pass.
However since the regional pass allows for travel on the same lines as the national pass it’s usually not worth buying it if you already have a national one.
If you have any doubts about which ticket to order please contact our travel agents.
I have booked my Japan Rail Pass but I have to push back my trip. Will I still be able to use my Japan Rail Pass?
IF YOU HAVE TO PUSH BACK YOUR TRIP LESS THAN 3 MONTHS.
When buying a Japan Rail Pass, you will receive a voucher to be exchanged for the actual Pass once in Japan. This exchange needs to take place within 3 months (90 days) of the purchase date. If, despite the trip modification, you manage to exchange your Japan Rail Pass within the 3 months, then you don't have to worry about the validity of your Japan Rail Pass.
IF YOU HAVE TO PUSH BACK YOUR TRIP MORE THAN 3 MONTHS.
However, if you need to push back your trip more than 3 months (90 days) then your voucher validity period will expire and you will not be able to exchange it for a Japan Rail Pass.
If you need to push back your trip 90 to 365 days, please make a new order online nearer the travel date and send us back the old pass for a refund.
Please note that there is a cancelation fee applied if a new order is not made through our website.
The Japan Rail Pass exchange voucher issued by Japan Experience is refundable up to one year after its date of issue. There is a 15% cancellation fee withheld from the refund whatever the date of cancellation.
If you lose your Japan Rail Pass, reimbursement can only occur if the pass has not been exchanged and 6 months from the issue date of the exchange coupon. The cancellation fee remains 15% as long as there is validation from our supplier that the exchange coupon has not been exchanged, whatever the date of cancellation up to one year after the date of issue.
You are eligible for a full refund if you booked a new Japan Rail Pass with the same duration or more. In the rare event of your Japan rail pass being lost in the post, you will be eligible for a full refund, but only 6 months after purchase - the time needed to check that the voucher has not been exchanged with JR in Japan. Proof of loss can be issued on request and forwarded to your insurance company.
Please note that unused JRP Vouchers can only be refunded when successfully returned to any of our reception offices within 365 consecutive days from the purchase date.
Delivery issues will not constitute an exception so please allow sufficient time to organise your return as we are unable to offer any extensions. To be eligible for a partial refund, we must receive the unused voucher within the agreed timeframe.
Please keep in mind that the refund will be dependent on the purchase price.
Japan Experience is not responsible for any denied exchange of the voucher for the Japan Rail Pass once in Japan, regardless of the reason.
Japan Railways will be implementing price increases for their passes, according to a recent announcement.
Below is the new pricing for the Japan Rail Pass:
- 7-day pass: ¥50,000 per adult (¥25,000 for children)
- 14-day pass: ¥80,000 per adult (¥40,000 for children)
- 21-day pass: ¥100,000 per adult (¥50,000 for children)
These prices will come into effect from October 2023. If you're planning on visiting Japan after this date and want to use the JR Pass, you'll need to factor in the increased cost.
What does this mean for travelers?
The increase in JR Pass prices will undoubtedly make traveling around Japan more expensive for foreign tourists. However, it's essential to note that the JR Pass may still be a cost-effective option for some travelers, depending on their itinerary.
If you're planning on visiting multiple cities and using the shinkansen (bullet train), the JR Pass can still save you money, even with the increased prices. It is important to consider the length of your stay in Japan. If you're only staying in Japan for a week, the 7-day pass may be a more cost-effective option.
Plan ahead and get inspired from our travel tips in Japan.
As of April 14th, JR has announced that the price of the Japan rail pass will increase by 70% in October 2023.
If you're planning to travel to Japan between October and December 2023, it's a good idea to purchase your JR Pass before the prices go up. The physical voucher will be delivered to your home and can be exchanged in Japan within 3 months of the purchase date.
By buying the pass early, you can avoid any adjustment fees when you exchange it in Japan. For example, if you plan to travel from December 10th to 16th and start using your special train ticket from December 10th, you can purchase it at the current price starting from September 11th.
Using a Japan Rail Pass
In order to activate your Japan Rail Pass you will have to exchange your voucher at a JR office. These offices can be found at the airport or in the main train stations.
Please note that exchange offices may have different opening times (check this article)
At the office, fill out the form at your disposal there and show the entry stamp that is on your passport. When exchanging your voucher you will have to decide on the date you want to start using your pass.
This date has to be within 30 days of the exchange. Once it is validated you will be able to use your pass starting on the date you have chosen for the consecutive number of days for which your pass is valid.
WHEN SHOULD I ACTIVATE MY JAPAN RAIL PASS ?
The exchange date does not have to be the starting date. You can choose your starting date when you exchange your voucher, that date cannot exceed 30 days after the exchange. If you hold a 1-week Japan Rail Pass you should be careful about your starting date. On a tight schedule, it is better to use a day rather than to waste one.
DO ALL TRAINS HAVE RESERVED SEATS?
Often, trains have some wagons dedicated to reserved seats ('shitei-seki'), whilst others are dedicated to unreserved seats ('jiyu-seki'). This is the case for Shinkansen trains.
However, most local trains don't have reserved seats, whereas other trains like the Narita Express only have reserved seats. (This does not mean that you will need to book in advance but only that, when you buy your ticket, you will be assigned a seat number).
WHY SHOULD I BOOK?
If you are not catching your Shinkansen during peak hours (between 7 am and 9 am and 6 pm-8 pm), and during bank holidays, you do not need to book your seat and you can use any non-reserved seat by showing your Japan Rail Pass.
In fact, the Shinkansen trains run very frequently (every 30 min), particularly on the Tokaido line, between Tokyo and Kyoto, so you don’t have to worry about booking.
Starting from May 2020, a seat reservation near the luggage area will be required in the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu lines if the sum of the dimensions of your luggage exceeds 160 cm.
HOW CAN I BOOK A SEAT?
However, if you want to book a seat you can do so without additional charges before you catch your train by going into a booking office at the train station (midori no madoguchi) and showing your Japan Rail Pass.
Booking website are usually in Japanese only, and therefore not very easy to use for non Japanese speakers. The JR East Shinkansen Reservation office is the only one with an English version that allows online booking.
However, you can only book Shinkansen and Limited Express trains running on the JR East network, that is to say Tokyo, the Northern part of Japan and the Narita Express.
Since the start of June 2020, it has been possible for Japan Rail Pass holders to reserve their seats for free at automatic ticket machines as well as JR ticket offices.
Once you have your Japan Rail Pass, you can use it in the JR trains (except the Nozomi and Mizuho shinkansen) during the period of validity.
What is a JR train ?
A JR train is a train operating by the JR company. It can be a shinkansen bullet train (for exemple between Tokyo and Kyoto or Tokyo and Kanazawa), a limited express train (for exemple between Toyama and Takayama), an express train, a rapid or a local train.
As the Japan Rail Pass is not a traditional ticket, you cannot go through the automatic gates. Instead, just show your pass to the staff in the glass booth next to the gates.
Instead, just show your pass to the staff in the glass booth next to the gates. They will let you through the gate in front of it.
Once inside the station it is quite easy to find a platform as they are all numbered and the indications concerning the lines and directions are everywhere. If, however, it is not clear, don't hesitate to ask the other travelers who, in most cases, will be happy to help you.
Since the start of June 2020, Japan Rail Passes have been issued with a QR code that allows you to use automatic gates to access station platforms.
You can find all our tips about traveling in Japan on our Japan by rail page.
Yes, of course. Your pass is valid on the JR lines linking the main airports to the main cities.
FIRST, YOU NEED TO EXCHANGE YOUR VOUCHER FOR THE JAPAN RAIL PASS AT THE AIRPORT.
You will be able to activate your Japan Rail Pass in the dedicated offices at the airport. The JR travel service centers or ticket offices are both usually located near to the access to the platforms.
REACHING THE CITY WITH YOUR JAPAN RAIL PASS.
Most airports are linked to the closest main cities by JR lines. For example, the Narita Express that links Narita Airport to Tokyo, Shinagawa, Shinjuku and Ikebukuro stations, the Tokyo Monorail, that links Haneda Airport to Hamamatsucho station or the limited express Haruka that links Kansai International Airport to Osaka or Kyoto.
However if you land at Fukuoka airport or Nagoya (Central Japan International Airport or Chubu Airport), you will have to reach the nearest station to exchange your Japan Rail Pass :
- From the airport of Fukuoka, JR Hakata Station is five minutes from the metro.
- From Chubu Airport, you will need to take the Meitetsu train to Nagoya Station, a 28-minute train ride. Note that if you are looking up timetables on Hyperdia, Chubu Airport's station name is Central Japan International Airport and the Meitetsu area of Nagoya Station is listed as Meitetsunagoya. Once you have arrived at Meitetsu Nagoya, the JR Station is just next door!
Please note that you will have to exchange the voucher for the actual ticket in Japan at the latest 90 days after your purchase. You will choose the starting date when you will exchange it.
Once your voucher has been exchanged and your Japan Rail Pass activated, your Japan Rail Pass is valid for 7, 14 or 21 full days.
The Japan Rail Pass validity is calculated in days, not in hours, so it does not matter what time you first use your pass.
Therefore, if you have a 7 days Japan Rail Pass and you start using it on March 1st, whatever the time, this will count as day 1, and you will be able to use until March 7th midnight.
Did you know that besides trains, the Japan Rail Pass also gives you access to some buses and ferries ?
Your Japan Rail Pass gives you access to the JR local bus lines (JR Hokkaido Bus, JR Bus Tohoku, JR Bus Kanto, JR Tokai Bus, JR Shikoku, West Japan JR Bus, Chugoku JR Bus, JR Kyushu Bus). Pass validity for particular routes is subject to change.
Please note that the Japan Rail Pass is not valid for travel on express bus routes operated by JR bus companies.

Train Tickets
Reserving seats on the Shinkansen bullet train isn’t a necessity; however, we do suggest making a reservation during peak travel times, specifically during Spring (sakura season) and during New Year's, for example. Trains may also be crowded during major holidays and events, such as large festivals. You’ll also need to make a reservation for oversized luggage on the Shinkansen.
With over 40 years of dedicated experience dealing specifically with Japan travel and tourism, you can rest assured that we will have the best knowledge and familiarity with getting around the country. Our train tickets are acquired through an official partnership with JR West. We also offer reliable and expert assistance thanks to our onsite team in Japan, flexible modification options, and a fully digital booking experience with no hidden fees.
- Arriving early
If you plan on exchanging your train tickets at your departure station before taking your train, please give yourself ample time to do so in order to not miss your train. While the process of exchanging your tickets at the JR machines is quick and easy, anticipate any waiting in line you may face to access the machines, especially during peak travel seasons (Spring, Golden Week, Fall, New Year's).
- Phone number/Identification Number
When exchanging your QR code for train tickets at JR machines, you may be asked to input an identification number/phone number. This is NOT your personal phone number.
→ The said phone number is the one Japan Experience provides you with in your booking confirmation email.
You will not be asked to input any personal details at JR machines, only the information provided to you by Japan Experience. Please refer to the booking confirmation email you will receive, the user guide you will receive with your QR code, and this article detailing the exchange process.
Modification and Cancellation
Order cancellation
Customers have up to 3 working days prior to their departure date to cancel their train ticket orders as long as they have not scanned the corresponding QR code and exchanged for their physical train tickets. A 15% cancellation fee will be charged, and the QR code will be instantly deactivated upon order cancellation. Cancellation of only a portion of the booking is not possible.
For train ticket orders that have already had the corresponding QR code scanned and where the tickets have been received, or orders in less than 3 working days before departure, orders may be canceled at JR Station offices in the departure city up to 10 minutes before your train departure.
JR staff will refund you, in cash, in yen (¥):
Up to 2 days before departure: the price of the ticket minus 560¥ as cancellation fees.
From 1 day before to 10 min before departure: the price of the "normal fare" ticket minus 220¥ and 70% of the "limited express" ticket. To sum up, in that case, you will receive a cancellation refund of around 70% of your initial order, given that Japan Experience service fee and currency exchange rate difference cannot be refunded.
Past the day and time of departure, refunds cannot be issued, regardless if the corresponding QR code has been used or not, and regardless if customers have received their physical tickets or not. Note that, however, if you missed the departure train of the time, you can still board the next trains within the next hour, in non-reserved seats.
- If your train is delayed more than 2 hours, then:
If you decide not to use your train tickets to travel to your destination, you can claim a full refund for them by contacting us here or by email at contact@japanexperience.com with your order number and photos of all your tickets (if you have already used your QR code to print your tickets at the machine, if not, no photos are required)
If you were able to take your delayed train to your destination, you can go to the JR counter at your destination with your tickets and request a partial refund (around 85% of the initial ticket price, depending on the current exchange rate). The refund will be made in cash.
If you still plan to travel to your destination, you can go to a JR desk to modify your tickets free of charge. You can change your tickets to a train at a later time or date, but cannot claim for any compensation

- Departure time on the same day OR seat for another seat except luggage seat:
Japan Experience can modify one time, free of charge, your booking if the corresponding QR code has not been used AND if it is NOT within 3 working days of the departure date.
You will then be sent a new QR code to use at JR stations to exchange for your new tickets.
Otherwise, you will need to go to JR station machines to exchange your QR code to receive your tickets and then change the departure time at the same machine up to 10 minutes prior to your train departure.
You cannot modify the same ticket twice. For the second modification, the order will need to be canceled (check cancellation conditions) and then re-ordered with the new travel information.

Japan Experience cannot modify your booking. You will need to go to JR station machines to exchange QR code to receive your tickets and change time at the same machine up to 10 minutes prior to departure. There may be a difference in fare to be paid on the spot.
You cannot modify the same ticket twice. For the second modification, the order will need to be canceled (check cancellation conditions) and then re-ordered with the new travel information.

- There are different types of carriages on the Shinkansen, with different levels of accommodation. The Ordinary Car is the most general seating option, but Shinkansen bullet trains are, by default, more luxurious than other types of trains due to them being built for long-distance travel. These accommodations include reclinable chairs, overhead storage, hooks for outerwear, deployable trays, and electrical outlets.
- The Green Car is the next step up in luxury from the ordinary car, featuring even deeper reclining chairs and more legroom. All seats in these cars need a reservation. The oversized luggage area is also included with a seat on the Green Car.
- The Gran Class Car is much like the Green Car but with even more elevated accommodations. Seats are formatted 2x1, optimizing room, and often, snacks and refreshments are included. Gran Class cars exist only on JR East lines, such as Tokyo <-> Nagano and Tokyo <-> Kanazawa.
If you're traveling with baggage measuring less than 160 cm (length + width + height), you don't need to make an additional reservation, and you can store your baggage in the overhead compartment above your seat.
For baggage measuring more than 160 cm and up to 250 cm (length + width + height), you need to make an advance reservation before you can take your baggage on board the Shinkansen. On board, you'll need to stow your baggage in the areas reserved for bulky luggage, generally located behind the last seats in the car, and in special compartments located between the cars. This includes luggage such as sports equipment, musical instruments and strollers.
Luggage measuring more than 250 cm (length + width + height) is not permitted on board the Shinkansen. Each passenger can take up to two pieces of luggage on board the Shinkansen.
You can find more details about luggage rules aboard the Shinkansen here.

- With the train there are no traffic jams so it is dependable. But it is a bit more expensive (you have to get a taxi or the bus to the train station) and requires a little physical effort to reach the train (Haruka) from the taxi station.

- Shoes: The Japanese take their shoes off in the entrance area (genkan), where they swap shoes for slippers. (The special slippers for the toilets should not be used in other parts of the house.)
- Selective waste sorting: The Japanese accord great importance to the selective sorting of waste. Japan Experience expects you to live in harmony with your neighbours by respecting the community's environmental standards. Good selective sorting is the first mark of respect for your neighbours.
- Noise: Japanese houses are quite badly insulated from noise. You should never forget this when adjusting the sound of the radio…
- Staircases: The (small) houses which mainly constitute our offer all have extremely steep stairs which do not conform with European standards or customs. To prevent falling the consequences of which may be serious, we have generally installed a hand-rail on both sides of the staircase intended to prevent falls. We urge holidaymakers not to wear socks when going up or down stairs, but to have bare feet, which generally offer better protection from slipping.
There are no telephones in the houses; however you will find lots of telephone booths generally just a few meters from your home. You can call Japan or abroad with coins or with a phone card available for sale everywhere.
You will find books and guides in your home on Kyoto or Tokyo and its surroundings. The Travel Angel will also give you a map of the city upon arrival and will show you the different practical and useful places.
The Travel Angel is available by telephone or by email and can be reached regularly for any kind of question.
There are many ways of getting around in Kyoto: by bus, taxi, metro, bike... and walking. The majority of travellers generally recommend using the bus (economical and reliable), bicycle rental, and especially walking to make the most of the beautiful surroundings.

Car Rentals
At the time of your reservation request on our site, we give you a quote. What are the elements included in the rental amount?
The amount of the vehicle rental: it is calculated in terms of vehicle category and period of use, in accordance with a degressive rate of charge.
The obligatory insurance costs 1,000 yen per day.
The consumer tax represents 10% of the total amount.
If you return the car to an agency other than that from where you originally rented it, a repatriation fee is added to the rental price. The options you will have chosen: some will have a daily charge, others will have a single one-off charge per rental.
Unlimited mileage.
When you go to take the vehicle from the branch please be sure you have:
- Your reservation confirmation showing your reservation number and your name
- Your international driving licence/ the translation of your driving licence in Japanese along with the original
- Your passport
- Credit card with which you are to settle your account/the amount to be paid in cash
If that were to be the case, let the branch in question know in advance, or call us so that we can inform them.
If you hand the car back later or earlier, the difference in the rental amount will be adjusted on the credit card you have used or in cash, according to your payment method.
No, this is not possible. It is necessary to return the car back during branch opening times.
Only branches situated in airports can offer out of hours solutions, which may suit you in terms of the time of arrival and departure of your flight, but this request must be made in advance.
Please be aware that only certain large branches such as Tokyo railway station are open 24 hours a day.
Yes, it is possible to return the car to a different branch from the one you picked it up from.
Note that, in such an event, it may be necessary to pay an extra charge for the repatriation of the car and such costs are often high in Japan (returning the car back to another location is not common).
The amount of the repatriation costs are calculated on the basis of the distance between the two branches. Please note that it is not possible to take a car on one island and return it to another (Example: taking a car to Hokkaido and returning it to Honshu is not possible).
If you are travelling with children, be aware that Japanese law requires that a child seat be used for children under six years of age. This is why the child seat option is obligatory if you are travelling with a child under six years of age.
In the options, you can find 3 types of car seat, to be selected in terms of the age and size of your child: a baby seat for those less than 12 months old; a child seat for those aged between 12 months and 4 years; and a junior seat for those aged between 3 and 11 years.
Furthermore, please be aware that motorways and other roads have numerous rest areas and toilets (generally very clean), allowing for lots of toilet breaks.
Find below the rules :
- Cancellation is free of charge up to 8 days prior to the pick up date.
- 100% of cancellation fee will be charged if you cancel within 7 days of pick-up or in case of no-show.
- Changes of rental conditions are possible anytime before 24hrs of your pick up.
- Changes of rental conditions are not possible within 24hrs of the pick up.
All cars on offer are automatic.
Even if one were to request one, it is most difficult to find a manual car as they are very reduced in number.
Due to space constraints and airport regulations, some rental branches are not situated directly at the airport next to the terminals where the flights arrive to and depart from. Nissan Rent a Car uses a shuttle bus service to transport their customers between the nearest rental branch and the airport.
For Narita and Haneda airports in particular, Nissan has introduced a special system.
- Picking up your vehicle
The branches here are counters within the terminal building, please follow the signs and directions to pick up your vehicle. If traffic and car parking conditions permit, a Nissan Rent a Car employee will have brought your car to the terminal otherwise there is a shuttle bus service to take you to the local rental branch.
- Dropping off your vehicle
You are not able to drop off a car to the counters in the airport terminal. You must return the car to the “Narita” branch location for Narita Airport and “Otorii Station Haneda” for Haneda Airport. From here you will then be taken to the airport, either in the car you have been using or in a shuttle bus.
The following points are therefore very important:
- You allow sufficient time before the departure of your flight to complete the drop-off process.
- If you are in a larger vehicle, please drop off your passengers and luggage at the terminal first and then the driver should proceed to the branch location alone.
PLEASE BE AWARE, it is not possible to drive in Japan with just your driving licence issued in your home country.
This is not sufficient and you will not be allowed to collect a rental car and will be prosecuted if caught driving in Japan.
To drive in Japan you need to have either of the following types of documentation:
Nationals holding a driver's licence from France, Belgium, Germany, Monaco, Switzerland and Taiwan are unable to use the International Driving Permits issued in these countries. To be able to drive in Japan you must obtain an official translation in Japanese of their driving licence.
Such translation can be done through the JAF (Japan Automobile Association).
Alternatively you can benefit from our driver's licence translation service and we will take care of all the details for you.
CAREFUL: At the time of your renting your vehicle, you will be required to show your original licence along with its translation as well as your passport.
A translation of your driving licence is valid for the entire validity of the licence. Keep it safe so that you can use it for any subsequent trips to Japan.
If your country does not issue International Driving Permits based on the 1949 Geneva Convention or does not have an agreement with Japan regarding official driving licence translations then your driving licence is not covered by either of the two scenarios above. We are sorry but you will not be able to rent a car or drive in Japan without obtaining a Japanese driving licence.
CAREFUL: The regulations for driving in Japan change and do change often so we cannot guarantee the accuracy of the information contained herein, not be held responsible for any situation arising from the use of the information contained on this page. If you have any doubts about the requirements to be able to drive in Japan, please consult your local Japanese Embassy.
Also note that the driver licence is non refundable.
In the event of an accident:
- the police. The number is 110.
- an ambulance or the fire service if there is anyone injured. The number is 119.
- your local Nissan rental branch. The number of your rental branch is indicated on your reservation form.
In the event of a breakdown:
- The Japan Automobile Federation or JAF offers a 24/7 support service for problems on the road. If you call between 09:00 and 18:00 you will be able to talk to an English-speaking operative. Outside of these times the service is in Japanese.
- The number is 0570-00-8139 or #8139 from your mobile phone.
- Your local Nissan rental branch to let them know that the car has broken down.
The phone number of your rental branch is indicated on your reservation form.
If you have subscribed to our Drivin’ Assistance service, the number where you can reach our team in Japan will automatically be sent to you with the confirmation of your order.
In the majority of cases, road signs, particularly place names, are also indicated in Roman letters.
However, occasionally this is not the case, for example on country roads or more remote areas.
It is therefore advisable to have maps available and be equipped with a GPS. The highway code signs correspond to international standards, there should be no big surprises, but they can be slightly different.
To learn more, refer to our article on road signs and driving rules in Japan.
Driving in Japan under the influence of alcohol is strictly prohibited. The limit is 0.03 g of alcohol in the blood. That is to say one beer on average for women and a little more than one beer for men, and you would be over the limit.
It is also against the law to ALLOW someone to drive when they have been drinking or to lend a car to someone who has been drinking or to serve alcohol to anyone who has to drive. If you are a car passenger where you suspect the driver is under the influence of alcohol, you are yourself effectively in breach of the law.
Punishment varies from a fine to imprisonment. A fine will also be given to anyone who refuses to take a breath analyser test.
When you rent a car with Japan Experience and Nissan rent-a-car, you are automatically covered in the event of an accident. Please find below the details of your cover.
COVER
Third party bodily injury cover is unlimited and includes mandatory third party automobile liability insurance up 30 million yen.
You are also covered up to 20 million yen per accident for property damage and up to the market value of the vehicle for damage to the vehicle.
You are also covered for up to 30 million yen for personal bodily injury.
THE ZERO DEDUCTIBLE PLAN
When booking a car with us, you benefit from the Zero Deductible Plan, for which the deductibles (policy excess) applicable to property damage and own vehicle damage will be waived.
For the full details of the cover provided, please consult the Nissan rent-a-car document.
CIRCUMSTANCES WHERE INSURANCE DOES NOT APPLY
If the accident is not declared to the police or to a Nissan branch
The hirers have contravened the rental contract
The case does not fall under the conditions for insurance cover (e.g.: damage to the driver’s posessions, tire damage, loss of hub cap, intentional damage etc....)
Damage due to negligence on the part of the lessee (theft of a vehicle not having been locked by key, damage to a car having been driven along roads not suitable for motorised vehicles such as coast roads or alongside rivers etc.)
THE « NON-OPERATION CHARGE » (NOC)
In Japan, drivers are used to paying great attention to their vehicles, and you will see very few damaged cars in the streets. Importance attached to dents and scratches is much greater in Japan than in the majority of countries. This is why the Japanese have the habit of handing back vehicles in an immaculate and impeccable state, and that rental branches thus envisage and insist on a safety clause so as to incite drivers to pay more attention.
The « Non-Operational Charge » (NOC) applies if the car is handed back in a state requiring repair or cleaning by reason of misuse on the part of the lessee, as compensation for the time period during which the car is unusable.
If the car is handed back to the branch: 20,000 yen
If the car has not been able to be handed back to the branch (due to its not working) : 50,000 yen

Design the trip you've always dreamed of! Our specialist advisors are available by email, telephone or directly in one of our agencies to answer all your questions and help you design your own customised tour.
For a first trip to Japan, a period of 2 weeks is optimal, with at least 3 days in Tokyo and 3 days in Kyoto and its region. Don't forget to take some time at the beginning of the trip to get used to the time difference.
Recommended dates for seeing the spring flowers:
- plum blossoms: mid-February to mid-March
- cherry blossoms (sakura): between 20 March and 15 April (dates vary from year to year)
- wisteria, iris, azaleas: mid-April to end of May
- hydrangeas: June
- lotus flowers: August
Recommended dates outside of spring :
- Autumn leaves: mid-November
- Observation of Zen gardens under the snow: mid-December to mid-February
Most Japan Experience tours begin in Tokyo. This is because it is the gateway to both modern and traditional Japan. Tokyo allows a traveller to enter Japan step by step, whilst getting used to the time difference. Tokyo also has Japan's top two airports in terms of traffic.
A few of our tours end in the Kansai region (Kyoto or Osaka). The return flight then goes from from Kansai International Airport (KIX), the 3rd largest airport in Japan, offering many possibilities for return flights to Europe without any real extra cost compared to a return flight from Tokyo. On these tours, the Japan Rail Pass does not cover the whole tour, allowing you to reduce the total price of the tour. And this without losing any transport possibilities as the Japan Rail Pass is of little use in Kansai.
However, tours are available from Tokyo and sometimes other cities in Japan.
Travelling in Japan is cheaper than travelling in Europe, except for transport:
a. By train (that's why a Japan Rail Pass is the best solution)
b. By taxi: with the exception of short trips, taxis are expensive.
Please note that fruit and vegetables in supermarkets are also significantly more expensive in Japan.
For meals and accommodation, there are some interesting options. You can find tasty lunches for €7-8, even in Tokyo. For accommodation, Japan Experience offers traditional accommodation in the major tourist cities of Japan, with good value for money.
In short, it is entirely possible to quickly reduce the price of a trip to Japan by adjusting your various budgets (food, accommodation, transport), without sacrificing the quality of your stay!
Finally, we advise you to go to Japan with Yen (¥) from our partner Comptoir Change Opera (https://www.ccopera.com/). The vast majority of payments in Japan are still made in cash.
You can pay online by credit card.
In our agency, you can pay by credit card, cash (under €1.500) or cheque with proof of identity (France only).
